​A PMO that evolves with your business

For over 20 years I have seen first-hand how an effective Project Management Office (PMO) plays a vital role in delivering change within a modern business by creating structure, providing clarity, giving confidence to decision-making, and ensuring projects deliver on-time, within budget.

During this time I have observed how the PMO function must evolve to meet changing organisational and project needs. PMO services must support faster decision-making, provide meaningful insights and adapt to increasingly complex delivery environments.

The bottom line is that the PMO must make a tangible difference to programme, project and product delivery, and everyone must feel the benefit. For that to happen, the PMO's contribution to delivery must be clear. 

A successful PMO is never a ‘one-size-fits-all’, it must be tailored to the business, the project and the wider operating environment. My experience, across global businesses and diverse sectors, has reinforced that an effective PMO is built on adaptability - as businesses continue to evolve, so too must the PMO function, ensuring it remains relevant, practical, and valuable in delivering successful outcomes.

AI in PMO

As the PMO function continues to evolve, I am excited by the opportunities AI can bring. AI has the potential to strengthen reporting; improve forecasting; increase visibility of risks and dependencies; support resource management; and reduce time spent on routine administration. Used effectively AI can improve efficiency and enable PMO teams to focus more on strategic support, insight, and value creation.

Keeping the Human Factor at the Centre

While I look forward to how AI can be incorporated into PMO, I strongly believe the human factor must remain central. Successful project delivery still depends on judgement, communication, collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to understand people, culture, and context. The opportunity to combine the power of AI, with the power of human relationships, promises to keep PMO functions as relevant and valuable as they have always been.
